These pictures are just a fraction of a second apart, so you can tell how amazingly fast the action is. My lens was 300mm, my camera on manual focus--set to focus on the general area of the action--and then I snapped nonstop. |

You can see that the action is moving rapidly to the left. The dogs are wearing
"cut collars" made with heavy leather, as thick as the sole of your shoe. The slashes and punctures on the collars show the injuries that the dogs escaped because of them. |

You can make
out the hog's eye as a small, dark spot at the edge of the tree trunk, and
larger, shadow of his ear just to the right and above. You can't see Jake's head, but the strap on his collar is red and it's just to the right of the ear. Look how fast the dog lunged at the hog and closed the distance to zero! The dog, though, is taking too many chances. |
