Our axis breeder pen. Axis are primarily grazers, unlike the whitetail which eat well over 90% browse.
|
A three year old buck in velvet. Unlike the whitetail who run with
their heads held up as though proudly, the axis and many of the Asian deer
run with their nose stretched forward even when they're not running does.

Something spooked
this herd. The bucks, one in hard horn and the other in velvet, show a
feature of axis and most tropical deer--they can be in rut any time of
year.

Below
is a handsome buck with a typically prominent white throat patch.
Compare his to the does' necks on the next page. While he is in hard horn,
he is not in rut--you can see that his neck is not swollen.
