JULY 16th - WALLOWING RED DEER & ELK
elk bulls and red deer stags wallowing
Elk and red deer love to wallow. Upper left is a female red deer, called a hind.

The wet mud hole was right next door, but this stag preferred the thick mud.

Besides cooling, the mud also helps to escape bothersome insects.

The elk hybrid is on the right.  The red deer is plastered with mud from his wallow.

Some are grazing and some are browsing.

It looks like they're wondering what they're missing out on in those woods.

The red deer have the smaller size, darker color, and smaller, darker rump patch.
